“Whose Authority?” A Reflection on Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus says,

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Jesus has passed his authority on to Peter and the Church; the purpose of this authority is to save souls for eternal life.

The wisdom and authority of God are frequently in conflict with the wisdom and authority of the world which often seeks power, pleasure and intellectual superiority. Our lives are shaped by the authority we choose to influence our decisions.

Is our primary purpose in life the salvation of our souls and the souls of the people we love?   If so, let us follow the authority of the Church which has been commissioned to save souls.
